TILÉK
NOISE SENSITIVE OFFICE LAMP
SOLO PROJECT | 2 WEEKS | INTERACTION DESIGN | 2020
We cannot shut our ears.
Noise levels in open offices can reach up to 65 dB and that would be similar to the sound level of a vacuum cleaner.
55 dB sound level is equivalent to a calm conversation. And that is the level appropriate for intellectual work, according to the German Engineer Association.
But how to remain under 55 bB?
A sound-sensitive office desk lamp „Tilėk“ identifies when there is too much sound, visualizes it, and nudges to keep it down.
“Tilėk“ makes the noise visible and allows the issue to be tackled collectively in order to achieve a new workplace culture and habits.
How does it work?
When the lamp is turned on, the sound level is measured by the microphone that is placed at the upper part of the lamp. The signals are sent to a microcontroller in the lower part that calculates the average dB of the past 10 s and adjusts the LED strip brightness accordingly.
If the level is above 55 dB the lamp dims proportionally to the loudness. If the sound level stays at 55 dB or below, the lamp shines at 100% brightness.
